WHAT IS RSS

RSS (Real Simple Syndication) is a technology that allows consumers to "subscribe" to updates from a specific web site. When the web site is updated, consumers with RSS Readers that subscribed to the site, will get automatic updates when they are connected to the Internet. These sites use a technology called XML to create RSS Feed files. These feed files contain the links to site updates both text and audio (i.e. MP3 file). When the site is updated, the XML file (RSS Feed) is updated and your RSS reader then displays the updates with links to further information on the site. For those Feeds that contain audio, the update will include a link to download the audio file, which can then be played with any media player such as Windows Media Player or Real Player. These type of audio downloads are called Podcasts.

There are many different RSS readers that can be downloaded for free from the Internet. Some readers are standalone applications and some integrate with existing desktop applications such as Internet Explorer or Outlook. Portals such as Yahoo.com also contain RSS readers that are part of their site and are free to consumers. Some providers of RSS readers include Pluck.com, which integrates with Internet Explorer, or...

Once you have a reader installed on your computer, as you browse web sites from which you would like to receive updates, look for the "XML" button or an RSS Link. At that point, you simply click on the "XML" button found on the web site or web site section from which you wish to subscribe to updates. For sites such as Yahoo.com, to subscribe you will have to put the specific RSS feed file, known as an XML file, into the appropriate fields on the site.
